What is Integrative Medicine?

Integrative medicine is a holistic approach to healthcare that combines the best of conventional Western medicine with a broader understanding of the nature of illness, healing, and wellness.

It is a healing-oriented medicine that takes into account the whole person including all aspects of their life.

It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship between a practitioner and their patient.

It informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapies.

It is not an alternative to conventional medicine.

Elements of an Integrated Medicine Practice

Person-Centered Care

Where you are treated as a whole person, not just symptoms or a disease - understanding your unique set of circumstances, all aspects of your life & lifestyle.  Where the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and environmental influences that can affect your health are addressed.

Collaborative Care

Therapeutic relationship between you and me.  It involves a team approach, including others in the field (like your primary and/or specialty care physicians) to ensure that everyone is on the same page and nothing falls through the cracks.  Integrative medicine therefore works alongside, not instead of, conventional care.

Education and Self-empowerment

You will be educated and encouraged to take an active role in your own health and well-being. This can involve teaching about nutrition, stress reduction techniques, and other lifestyle interventions such as culinary medicine.

Cultural Sensitivity

Integrative medicine recognizes and respects the diverse backgrounds and beliefs of people, and we will ensure that care is tailored to your specific culture and needs

Evidence-Based Approaches

Treatments that have sound scientific evidence behind them are used including both conventional treatments and alternative therapies that have been shown to be effective.  The goal is always to first do no harm.

Natural and Less-Invasive Interventions

Whenever possible, the integrative medicine approach prioritizes natural, less-invasive interventions over drug or surgical approaches, considering the potential side-effects and long-term consequences of treatments

Mind-Body Connection

The interconnection between the mind and body in health and healing will be explained and its concepts utilized. Techniques such as meditation, yoga, and relaxation can be integrated into treatment plans

Continuous Learning and Adaptability

Integrative medicine is an evolving field. I am continually updating my knowledge and practices based on the latest scientific evidence and discoveries

Prevention and Lifestyle

The importance of preventing illness before it starts is emphasized, and healthy lifestyles as a fundamental aspect of disease prevention and treatment is promoted

Traditional and Holistic Healing Methods

At times we could incorporate traditional and indigenous healing practices, which can be valuable and effective in certain situations. This can include practices such as acupuncture, Ayurvedic medicine, or herbal remedies

Environmental Health

We will take into account the effects of the environment on your  health, including exposures to chemicals and other toxins

It is important to note that not all therapies under the umbrella of integrative medicine have the same level of scientific backing. As with any medical intervention, it's essential for people to consult with knowledgeable professionals such as Dr. Koniaris and consider the evidence, benefits, and risks associated with any treatment or intervention
